Legends and Myths About the Aries Constellation

Once upon a time, King Athamas of Croneus had twin children, Phrixus (boy) and Helle (girl), with Queen Nephele. But then the king fell in love with Princess Ino of Thebes and took her as his new wife, driving Queen Nephele out of the palace. After having her own children, she sought to eliminate the two children of her predecessor.

She bribed a soothsayer to spread rumors to the king that: "If the two children of the former queen are not sacrificed to the gods, they will be angry and cause famine, leaving the people starving." Queen Nephele learned of this and prayed to the god Zeus. Zeus then sent the Aries (Ram) with a golden fleece to rescue the two siblings.

Because the ram flew so fast, the little girl Helle could not hold on and fell into the sea (this stretch of water was later called the Hellespont). The ram turned its head to look at his sister, flying while trying to protect Phrixus. To honor the animal's courage, Zeus lifted it into the sky, which is now the Aries constellation that we see today.
