Planets in Your Chart Have Drama With Each Other. That's Called an Aspect.
You know how in any good group of friends, there are pairs who vibe effortlessly, pairs who constantly clash, and pairs who bring out a totally unexpected side of each other? Your birth chart works the same way.
The aspects are the angular relationships between planets in your chart. They're literally the angles — measured in degrees — between any two planetary positions. And those angles? They describe whether your planets are collaborating, fighting, merging, or creating that slow-burning tension that forces real growth.
If planets are the actors and the zodiac signs are their costumes, aspects are the plotlines — the dynamics that give your chart its story. 🎬
Where Aspects Come From
Every planet in your chart sits at a specific degree along the 360° circle of the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun). When two planets form a meaningful angular relationship to each other — like 0°, 90°, 120°, or 180° apart — that's an aspect.
The stronger (more exact) the angle, the more powerful the aspect. An aspect that's dead-on — like two planets exactly 120° apart — hits harder than one that's close but off by 8°. The gap between the exact angle and the actual angle is called the orb. Tighter orb = stronger influence.
These five major aspects have been in use since Ptolemy catalogued them in the 1st century AD — which is why they're sometimes called the Ptolemaic aspects.
Easy vs. Hard — Not What You Think
Modern astrology classifies aspects as easy or hard — but don't read too much into those labels.
- Easy aspects (Trine, Sextile) enhance natural talent and open up opportunity. Things flow.
- Hard aspects (Square, Opposition) create friction and challenge — but challenge that builds you.
Hard aspects are not bad. They're actually often responsible for the most dynamic, driven, interesting people. A chart full of only easy aspects can actually lead to stagnation — talent without motivation to use it. The most compelling characters, in stories and in real life, usually have some tension in their arc.
"Hard aspects may be negative, because they enhance a challenge where an adjustment must be made to reach balance."
The key is that the challenge is there to be worked with, not avoided. Astrology isn't a sentence — it's a map.
The Five Major Aspects
Conjunction (0°) — Merger 🔮
A conjunction happens when two planets are at approximately the same degree — within about 8–10° of each other. They merge their energies, amplifying and intensifying each other. It's the most powerful aspect of all.
Whether a conjunction is great or difficult depends entirely on which planets are involved. A Sun-Venus conjunction? Magnetic charm, natural warmth, an easy relationship with beauty and connection. A Moon-Saturn conjunction? The emotional world (Moon) meets structure and restriction (Saturn) — often producing someone disciplined and self-controlled, but who had to work hard to access their feelings.
There's even an ancient term for when a planet is in extremely close conjunction to the Sun (within 17 minutes of arc): Cazimi, which means "in the heart of the Sun." Considered intensely powerful in traditional astrology.
Opposition (180°) — Tension and Pull
An opposition is when two planets are exactly across the chart from each other — 180° apart. All the major chart axes are oppositions: the Ascendant/Descendant axis, the MC/IC axis. There's a reason for that.
Oppositions are fundamentally relational — they describe two different energies pulling in opposite directions. Think of it like a tug of war, or the tension between two characters who want different things. The energy is prone to exaggeration, because each end of the axis can go too far in its own direction.
But oppositions also create the possibility of integration. When you learn to hold both ends of the polarity — not choosing one and rejecting the other — that's where the growth happens. The person with a Sun-Moon opposition might feel pulled between their ego needs and emotional needs, but when they learn to honor both, they become remarkably self-aware.
Square (90°) — Friction That Moves You
A square is a 90° angle between two planets — think of the corner of a square. It creates strong and usable tension. The two planets involved often represent areas of life that don't naturally talk to each other, and the square forces a confrontation between them.
Squares are friction. Friction is uncomfortable. But friction also produces fire, and fire gets things done. Many of the most driven, accomplished people have prominent squares in their charts. The obstacle is the point — the tension forces you to develop something you wouldn't have built otherwise.
The key word for squares is turning point. There's always a decision involved: are you going to let the tension paralyze you, or are you going to use it?
Trine (120°) — Natural Flow ✨
A trine is 120° — the angle that separates signs of the same element (fire, earth, air, or water signs are all 120° apart from each other on the wheel). It's traditionally considered extremely beneficial. The two planets in trine share a natural ease and resonance; their energies flow into each other effortlessly.
Trines often show up as innate talent — things that come naturally, that you do without thinking. The downside? Because it's so easy, you might not push yourself to fully develop it. A Mars trine Jupiter in a chart could mean natural confidence and luck in taking action — but without other challenging aspects, that person might never feel the urgency to actually go for their biggest goals.
Trines are gifts. But gifts still have to be unwrapped and used.
Sextile (60°) — Gentle Opportunity
A sextile is 60° — similar energy to a trine but less intense. It indicates compatibility and harmony between two planets, usually connecting signs of complementary elements (like fire and air, or earth and water). It creates opportunity and easy communication between the two energies.
Where a trine is almost automatic, a sextile is an open door — but you still have to walk through it. These are supportive, friendly energies that offer you the chance to do something cool, but they won't drag you there.
A Quick Note on Orbs
Not all aspects of the same type are equally powerful. The orb — the gap between the exact degree and the actual planetary positions — determines strength.
General orb allowances used by most astrologers:
- Conjunction: 8–10°
- Opposition: 5–10°
- Square: 5–10°
- Trine: 5–10°
- Sextile: 4–5°
A Sun-Mars square at exactly 90° is going to hit way harder than one at 88°... and one at 96° might barely register. The tighter the orb, the more dominant the aspect in shaping your chart.
Minor Aspects — The Bonus Details
Beyond the five Ptolemaic aspects, there are minor aspects that add nuance to chart interpretation:
Semisextile (30°) — A subtle mental connection between two planets. Energy builds gradually. More internally experienced than externally obvious.
Quincunx / Inconjunct (150°) — This one's interesting. It connects areas of life that don't normally speak to each other, creating an awkward, sometimes disorienting link. Keywords: karmic, mysterious, unpredictable, creative. The quincunx often describes a tension that's hard to name but definitely felt — like two coworkers from completely different departments suddenly having to collaborate on a project.
So What Do You Do With All This?
Looking at aspects in your chart, start by identifying which planets are connected, then figure out what energies are involved, and then check whether it's an easy or hard aspect.
For example:
- Venus trine Jupiter — Your ability to attract good things and your sense of luck flow easily together. Natural abundance, warmth, generosity.
- Mars square Saturn — Your drive and ambition (Mars) clash with structure and restriction (Saturn). Frustrating at times, but produces incredible discipline when channeled well.
- Sun opposite Moon — Your core identity and emotional needs pull in opposite directions. A lifelong journey of integration that produces deep self-awareness.
The aspects don't tell you what will happen. They tell you how the energies in your chart relate to each other — which is really a map of the internal dynamics you're working with.
TL;DR — Aspects Are the Drama That Makes Your Chart Come Alive
Aspects are the angular conversations between planets. Conjunctions merge and intensify. Oppositions pull and polarize. Squares create friction that forces growth. Trines flow naturally. Sextiles open doors.
Easy aspects give you gifts. Hard aspects give you strength. And most people's charts have both — which is kind of the whole point. Life isn't all smooth sailing or constant struggle; it's the interaction between the two that creates something interesting.
Your chart's aspects are the plotlines that make you, specifically, you — and not just a generic description of your Sun sign. 🌌
